They don't return from the heel position to the center, but they do pop up 
from
the toe to a preset place. There's an adjustment in them to set the 
position of
that. Perhaps it's disabled in your's?

that. Is
it possible you have an EP-1, which is Yamaha's "regular" expression pedal?
