    I know a lot of folks who use MiniDisc to record sounds for films,
looping, binaural nature recording, etc.  It's a nice little format, and 
not
as expensive to get into as DAT.  Having said that, you'll find lots of
great advice at the DAT-heads mailing list and also at www.minidisc.org.
