Clubs often do suck, but if you're a loud ensemble, you're probably
going to have to deal with them.

To make it worthwhile to rent a place, hire a PA, someone to do sound,
take out some ads, get someone to run the door, etc. means you need a
good number of people to show up.  If you have enough people who will
pay to see you at your rented hall, then you can probably persuade a
club to book you.  But in a lot of cities, people want to go to "real"
clubs, not some Shriner's Hall in the sticks where there's no booze.
