RE: Robert Moog RIP

Title: RE: Robert Moog RIP

>>Sad news indeed. I've been playing ELP, Sun Ra, Jan Hammer, et al, today
at the store in tribute. I have the honor of owning a 1974 Minimoog, it's
one of the few truly beautiful instruments I own, and I intend to record a
piece in tribute tonight, time permitting.<<

make the time. mark his passing. I will be firing up my memorymoog & source tonight- both synths, I'm sure most people are aware, not designed by but certainly influenced by dr robert.

the booklet accompanying the excellent "manhattan research" cd set of raymond scott's work throws a bit of light on bob's post-student/pre-carlos period, during which he was commissioned by scott to build various devices. credit for the term "sequencer" is the subject of some debate, with moog declining the honour, but when you think about the first major recorded uses of the sequencer, his 960 modules figure prominently. a looping tool was born.

amongst my own earliest LP experiences of electronica (kraftwerk, tangerine dream, tomita....) is a two-LP set made by beaver & krause for nonesuch; "the nonesuch guide to electronic music". I can remember staring for hours at the pictures of the moog 3C system they used on this album, & trying (with very limited resources!) to build a sequencer of my own. perhaps my obsessive accumulation of hardware sequencers stems from this- whatever, musically, I owe pretty much everything to the good doctor's endeavours.

I hope he didn't suffer.
