The rc20 may be the cheap/ fast way to go. The laptop is going to mean  
a much bigger investment in hardware and software even if you have the  
laptop already.  If you can afford Live (a decent light version comes  
free with many m- audio interfaces and will get you started) that will  
give you a really good system with room to grow. Sooperlooper is free  
and live does its own audiolooping as well
