1st impression: BOSS RC-20 /state of looping NOW

wow-the amt of reading i've done in the last few days about the gear that's coming out...whew.....(and i cant' wait to see how much these things cost, and read people's reviews of the gear!)
god, i remember when i joined back in '01, there didn't seem to be many options for looping (especially for me on a budget), but now the amt of products that are out or coming out, pretty unreal.

well, yesterday as a late bday present for myself, i bought a used Boss RC-20-the original model off some listing on the tapeop.com page. only got to play w/ it for an hour last night...At first i read the manual on recording a loop, and i couldn't get it to work, so my first thought was: ITS BROKEN, ug....then i read more and figure out i had the mode button in the wrong place, got that figured out and hey i made my 1st loop on it.

the funny thing i found after thinking about it was -if i recorded myself playing w/ it, i would be dubbed the dumbest looper around. i swear i was listening to the loop trying to figure out what to add next, seemed like i sat there for 1/2 hr. oh well. (i also thouht the sound quality is very good-what goes in ,goes out)

the thing for me that i like is that to start a loop you just press button and you don't have to hold the pedal down, which i thought i may have to do, since i keep all my pedals at hands reach, then to stop it you press again. so i like that feature. and to over dub was the same. so i'm happy about that.
the other thing about it that is new for me is the move away from delay based looping that i've used for the last 8 yrs. so i hit it and didn't have to worry about 2 sec or 4 sec or 5 sec or 12 or 23 sec. i just hit it played a bit, hit it again. my loop wasn't that long (probably 10-12 sec), but it just seemed to be a different mentality than what i'm used to. boy i also love the reverse. Most fun-for some great sonic experimenting (missed that from my dod d12 sampler).
my only knock/gripe so far is the way you manipulate the tempo/speed. so far my attempts at that have not been very good-probably have to read more. my only wish is it had a big turnable knob that had SPEED/TEMPO/PITCH (whatever) so you could slow it down or speed it up. but that seems to be on the new slicer pedal, so maybe i'll have to wait (or get the EH-stereo memory man w/ hazarai-since that had that function which seemed most logical to me).
over all-i'm pretty happy w/ it-i think there will be hours of experimenting ahead w/ it.
the one other thing i know people complained about the unit was the limited 5 & 1/2 min for recording time. for me when i've been used to 2 sec to 23 sec for looping time, 5 1/2 min seems like FO-ever...not a problem for me.
happy looping....
