OT: quality of built-in audio interface

As my external audio interface is only laid out for mono recording (M-
Audio Fasttrack), I intend to record a stereo line signal directly
through the audio input of my laptop (Mac PowerBook G4). A first
quick test has produced satisfactory results. My question now is
whether I'd get considerably better results if I invested in an
external stereo audio interface. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Nico
