You probably have the "compressor" knob turned up. That will increase
the baseline volume of your signal when you turn the pedal on. I
compensate by adding a volume pedal after the chain.

In general, I put the Bitrman and Smashup early in a chain, and the
Philtre and Amplitron later in the chain.

It's hard to hear what the Smashup actually does at first. Try running
a drum machine or cd through it while dialing the knobs.
