Actually that's a technique that Jeff Kaiser has used for years.

I don't think he's on the list currently.

You might try him at <admin@pfmentum.com>

He uses a MOTU Ultralite inteface and some of the extra inputs and  
outputs to hook up a number of expression pedals to control MAX/MSP  
parameters.

I don't know much about it myself (haven't done the laptop thing yet)  
but Jeff is a close pal and we've been doing music together for a  
couple of decades.
