It would stop tracking when the limit of midi pitch bend
was reached.
Usually at 12 semitones.
If you used an open low E string it might give up some
time before that, as the range of pitch detection
usually won't go much below the range of the guitar.

I have experimented with pitch bend range, but not with a whammy,
just with bends and with fretless bass.
It seemed to work as expected.
One side effect is that with a wavetable patch the sample
will be bent out of it's best sounding range. 
Didn't record audio tho :-(
