The "jack detector" circuit is probably just that one half
of the power supply is connected to the "ring" contact
on a stereo socket. So that inserting a mono plug switches
on the power. 
That wouldn't be useful for the Sonica, for the obvious reason.

Or, at least, that's what I'd expect.
