the linear compositions you hear are nested in a totally cyclic rhythm
with
sam and kali falling on the same beat each time through depending on the
taal
one is focusing on... my main purpose in bringing this subject to the list
was that tabla is such a loop based instrument... if you consider the
fundamental taals they are trully little phrases or loops of specific
bols/strokes such as simple teentaal:
dha dhin dhin dha
dha dhin dhin dha
na tin tin na
na dhin dhin dha

I think it is however perfectly understandable to hear tabla as linear in
instrumental or solo performance... if you want to hear tabla in a more
cyclical manner I would suggest listening to some classical vocal music of
north india and focusing on the tabla when present.

I think as far as tabla machines go I prefer the riyaz master as well and
yea
Im totally tempted to go buy a handsonic because the tabla sounds are
great
but I just for now prefer my full scale but little tabla... hehe.

peace out,
K.
