RE: making field recordings

I've been pretty happy with some recordings I did with my Portable Minidisc
player and a SONY stereo condenser mic (sorry can't remember the model). I
used it three years ago to do some field recordings of the Harp Seal herd
off the coast of Prince Edward Island. It held up surprisingly well
considering the arctic conditions (-40 F out on the frozen ocean), the
display was not reliable at that temp, but the recordings came out fine. I
probably could have used a wind shield of some sort, but listening back
now,
I like the sound of the wind. I also managed to get a fairly interesting
recording of helicopter blades starting up in stereo from right below them.

If money were not an object, I would like to have a Binaural mic set up and
a DAT player.

Question: Can you make a Binaural mic set up easily? Is it significantly
more complicated than sticking condenser mics into the ears of a dummy
head?

Subject: making field recordings

Hi,

I'm curious to know if any of you make field
recordings. What kind of portable/remote
equipment do you use? Special mikes? Suggested
techniques? Helpful books or web sites for more
info?

Thanks!

Mary Jane

(ps: posted this question to the
ambient@hyperreal list also, so pardon if you get
this twice.)
