If you run e.g. Live 5.0 on a dual core machine, then it (and all of its
plugins) will only make use of one core.

Yes, but you have the OS and many other aps running on the other or both 
cores...so, again,
you still get better performance without having software that is written 
specifically to take
advantage of the duo core system. I think you alluded to this already.

The main point, then, is that no one should avoid a duo core system just 
because they have
software that isn't written to take advantage of it. The system will run 
better than a solo
core, period. .
