Yes, I have streamed S/PDIF from external hardware (effect rack
devices or other computers) into a FW interface's S/PDIF port. Both
with RCA cables and the recommended "digital cables" and I did not
notice any dropouts with the basic RCA cables. That is coaxial S/PDIF
(not optical S/PDIF).
Didn't note any difference in performance either.... but I'm not sure
I understand the question correctly. Are you asking if a S/PDIF port
on a Firewire based interface eats up more CPU compared to a S/PDIF
port on the motherboard? If so, I don't think so. I have been using
an Apple G5 a lot and this pc has an optical S/PDIF input, but I have
not thought about measuring "performance". My guess is that any such
eventual difference would be just microscopic.
