Heres a little known fact. 
After World War II, the Soviets and and Americans were locked in a bitter struggle to control Germanys looping technology. Japan was conducting experiments as well, but there research was incomplete and their initial efforts were fraught with errors. The  Americans ultimately smuggled many of Germanys top looping scientists out of Europe. 
The rest is history.
