Hm, I have to say that I was at a debut for Mike Oldfield's
retooled "Tubular Bells 2003" on SACD and Audio DVD (DVD Europe 2003), where
Mike talked about how the bells were in the studio filled with instruments that
Virgin granted him the use of for just ten days. He said that they didn't
know how to play them properly, and that they were slightly damaged in the
process of making the album. A note about this is found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubular_Bells :
"The concept for the triangular bell on the album cover art
originally came from the idea of a bell which had been destroyed. Oldfield had
come up with this when he had dented the set of Tubular Bells to record the
album when playing them."
So perhaps a new fold in the story, or another version of
it.
At DVD Europe 2003, though the first half of the Audio DVD was
played for us and it'd been remixed and overdubbed, very disappointing to a
number of us who could remember how the original sounded. John Cleese used
for the voice announcing the instruments - one of the only times I can remember
thinking his voice just didn't belong...
So it would seem there are multiple timelines being
concurrently maintained by some folks in the process. Confusing at best,
since usually what one is used to is the idea that everything from the record
company is BS, and the artist's version is usually closer to the truth.
Hm, sometimes.
