Actually, this cheesy approach to music-making goes back to the
rhythm units, autochords, and other gimmicks on electronic organs of
the 1960s.

There is a scene in the movie "Beethoven" (a movie about a dog, not
the composer) where a babysitter croons while playing on a spinet
organ while she ignores the kids that are nearly drowning in the
backyard pool.

And who could forget Monty Python's Flying Circus that featured a
naked man (John Cleese??) seated at a spinet electronic organ.

This kind of add-water-and-stir music-making seems to be the province
of musical psychopaths. Songsmith simply perpetuates this abominable
approach to music.

There are worse things, I suppose.

Such as Springsteen's crotch-attack on the world:

At least there wasn't a "wardrobe malfunction".

(end of rant)
