OT: Cheap Sub woofer

So I've been using a pair of smallish Yamaha powered monitors for a
while instead of a guitar amp and I'm generally very pleased with the
sound, but the bass has been somewhat lacking so I was thinking about
adding a sub-woofer to spread the low end out a bit.  Problem is, my
current set up is rather compact so I don't want to add a huge cube to
the mix if I don't have to.  I'd also like to spend as little as
necessary to get some decent bass.

Anyone have any recommendations on where to start?
