As well as using the EDP for this, I can also achieve a similar effect by 
using the 'Freeze' function on my Korg Toneworks AG3000 (maximum 2.7 secs 
loop), and punching new sounds (or silences) in and out.  Alternatively, 
similar results can be obtained using the Mini-Kaoss pad, patch 77, loop 
sampler (max. 2 secs loop), albeit slightly less predictable.
