A very intersting topic! My usual answer to that is very simple: Start
in the music and not in the technology! Assemble related musical
gestures assigned to a button set of the same bank. For example, you
may like to have an Overdube or Substitute button handy in each bank.
Also some may want a feedback expression pedal always accessible while
others think they better need a looper input volume pedal on that
degree. This is about music performance ergonomics and it all depends
on how you want to play.
If I wouldn't be so delighted with making music on the fly that goes
through all kind of improvised chord changes then I could do just fine
with less foot buttons. Line6 with MIDI Pipe would be one step better
for me than my recent FCB1010. Trading off one expression pedal to get
more instantly accessible stomp buttons to even access a full octave
for my pitch relevant commands.
