This is one significant difference between the Launchpad and the
APC40, Akai has not yet released the details of it's MIDI protocol.

People seem to be moaning about Akai not being "open" but it's
actually rather trivial to reverse engineer the protocol.  It sends
and receives MIDI like anything else, all you have to do is put
a message monitor between Live and the APC40 and watch what Live sends.
If Akai doesn't publish it, someone will.
