Are you implying that Tao has nothing to do with the concept of Zen?  Or 
just books of the 20th century?  "The Tao of Zen" by Ray Grigg was 
published 
in 1994, and argued that "much of Zen Buddhism was almost entirely 
grounded 
in Taoist philosophy, though this fact is well shrouded by the persistence 
of Mahayana Buddhist institutional trappings."

So I suppose this is a quasi-religious argument that has gone on for as 
long 
as modern Buddhism has existed, and shall continue as long as people wish 
to 
argue about it.
