if an fx has cheap electronics that degrade the sound quality,
which seems to be what you are describing here, then
1) use it in an fx send, on 100% wet mix setting...although that
  obviously doesn't work for filters, tremolo, etc
2)hard bypass it when not in use

there isn't any way to get back lost quality
