Not knowing what exactly Andy meant, but I can chime in here that I at
least know that you can't send MIDI into the Return Tracks. And if you
want to send MIDI into an Audio Track you need to go through a
loopback trick (OS X or an add-on app if running Windows). As far as
MIDI tracks go I see no restrictions in routing. So as long as you
open plugins on a MIDI track you route MIDI to them.

You don't always need to route MIDI into a plugin (or mixer part) in
Live because Live also has its own MIDI control system with a fast
MIDI Learn function for externally incoming MIDI data.

But isn't that a bit over the top in this discussion answering a
person that wants to replace a Roland looping pedal with Ableton Live?
There's no such nifty MIDI routing at all on those pedals! :-)
