Emerson tended to play ostinati with his left hand, over which he would 
solo
with his right. For all intents and purposes, he was playing a loop and
soloing over it. Prime examples would be the solo breaks in "Take a 
Pebble,"
"Trilogy," and most of "Tarkus."
