Frequently Asked Questions about the Looper's Delight List

What is Looper's Delight?

Looper's Delight is a cultural and informational resource for musicians creating with audio loops of every sort. Loop based music essentially involves the repetition of audio samples, or loops. From that basic premise looping moves off in numerous directions, encompassing a wide range of techniques for building, manipulating, and using loops. The technique crosses many musical boundaries and appears in a wide range of musical styles and genres.

What is the Looper's Delight Mailing list? What types of things are discussed on it?

Loopers Delight is a forum for discussing loops and loop based music. For posting, make sure you send to

There isn't much that is considered off-topic, but it should somehow relate to looping if you don't want to irritate people. Past, present and future topics include looping devices and setups (Oberheim Echoplex, Lexicon Jam Man and Vortex, Boomerang, samplers, MIDI, effects, mixers, speakers, etc). We've also had threads about improvisation, creativity, books, recordings, computers, Torn, Fripp, Eno , DJs, ambient, industrial, minimalist music, hip hop, drum and bass, Indian Classical music, sequencing, looping theory and philosophy, etc., etc. You name it, we've probably discussed it.

Are there posting guidelines for the Looper's Delight Mailing list?

Please set your mail program to use plain text when posting to Looper's Delight. Posts formatted in HTML or rich text are annoying on mailing lists, since not everybody can see those. They also use up many times more bandwidth and disk space than plain text emails.

Do not attach any files to your posts, as most people don't like getting file attachments from lists. This also includes those inane vcard things, background image graphics, audio files, etc. None of this junk is necessary for conveying your message anyway.

When replying to another list post, please try to edit judiciously the previous poster's message that you are replying to. Don't leave the entire thing on there, as that is a waste of bandwidth, disk space, and time for everybody on the list. Please use a reply style that clearly shows which is your new text and which is the old text you are replying to. The traditional method of placing a > in front of previous text is perfect for this, and most email programs have a setting to do this automatically. Also, replies are set to automatically go back to the list, so please check the address if you want to reply to somebody privately.

Are there archives of past list postings?

Definitely check out the archives at http://www.loopers-delight.com/cgi-bin/wilma/LDarchive

Is there a Digest form of LD? How do I receive it?

Yes, there is a digest. To subscribe, send mail with the word "subscribe" in both the subject and body, and no sig files or anything else, to:

You would then want to unsubscribe from the normal list, so send "unsubscribe" to:

For posting, make sure you send to the normal Loopers-Delight@loopers-delight.com address, or nobody will see it. Personally, I hate digest lists. I never get around to reading them because they arrive in one big, imposing lump. Replying to posts always seems to be a pain, and it's too slow to maintain a decent conversation, so I never do. I guess this happens to others as well, because the folks on the digest almost never participate. I suggest using email filters instead. Subscribe to the digest only if you have a good technical reason to do so.

I'm sorry, I need to unsubscribe from Looper's Delight. How do I do that? It's not that I dislike people there or anything, you understand.

To unsubscribe, send mail with the word "unsubscribe" in both the subject and body, and no sig files or anything else, to:

If you are on the digest version of Looper's Delight, send your unsubscribe request to:

Don't send your unsubscribe message to the list, or people will make fun of you and you will feel like a dork.

I'm having trouble subscribing/unsubscribing to the list. What's wrong?

Usually people have trouble because they try to have a conversation with me or someone while subscribing. Don't do that. The subscription process is automated, and the mailing list server is very stupid. Idle conversation totally confuses it. It only understands the words subscribe and unsubscribe, nothing else. It also will totally fail to understand the witty quote in your signature file. So turn those sig files off!

If you say anything other than "subscribe" it makes a confused whimpering sound and then replies to you with a help file. You may want to consider reading the help file before resending the exact same subscribe mail 30 times. (you'd be surprised, people do this!)

other common problems:

- Don't use the quotes on "subscribe." It's just subscribe

- Subscribe is spelled S - U - B - S - C - R - I - B - E.

- Make sure html and rich text formatting is turned off in your mail program.

- Make sure you are sending your request to the correct address noted above, and you have it spelled right. If you are on the digest, make sure you use the digest request address.
