I know how weird this is going to sound, but I changed several of my
configurations, and it seems that the problem was that Cubase doesn't like
the soundcard in full-duplex mode.  I changed it to half-duplex and
everything seems OK now.

What a sequencer!  All I want now is Syntrillium's Cool Edit Pro to
complement it with (I don't know - some people are never satisfied!)
