I used 3 minute continues loop casette tapes. I also used a vintage tape echoplex. The echoplex tapes where usually about 3 minutes also. Three minutes are plenty for looping especially if you're over dubbing. I still have a few echoplex's that I use once in a while by the way. One has four line inputs.
