Another suggestion, which I didn't think of until reading some other 
posts, is
Painkiller (Zorn / Bill Laswell / Mick Harris), especially the album
"Execution Ground". 

Total improv, two discs, one day, two mixes - one straight, the other 
ambient.
Some amazing stuff.
