The key to acoustic amplification is a piezo pickup, a Crate 125(D) 
acoustic
amp, with line level to a good board.  Cut all midranges back, boost your
bass and treble.  For volume control try a Morley Pro volume pedal, you can
adjust the swing of volume levels in the pedal with a small pot on the 
side.

If you approach your acoustic instrument like you would a microphone on
stage, you'll be just fine.  Stay away from any direct feedback sources 
like
monitors etc.

If you play a real loud situation, get a Crate 125D and use the amp for 
stage
presence only.  The amp will be behind you so it won't contribute to
feedback.  Then take the line level from the amp and let the soundman pump 
it
into the PA .

P.S.  In the 70's there was basically no such thing a good sound in a live
setting.  So back then, everything was just loud with huge amounts of mids.
Today, you can cut your power requirements by 1/2 or more because the
amplification and speaker qualities, crossovers etc.  are so good at
reproducing sound.  If you're using old equipment, you may want to check 
out
stuff made in the last 5 years or so.  You'll be shocked.
