Allan Holdsworth is (was??? he's been known to use a VG8 and Yamaha DG10 too these days) a big proponent of skipping the preamp altogether and using an entire tube amp head as the preamp. You take the speaker output and run it into a box that converts it into a line-level signal. Rocktron used to sell the Holdsworth Juice Extractor for this purpose, and Allan himself made them on a per order basis for a while. There may be similar products out there such as the Lexicon "recording amp".
