The synthetic sounds in the VG-8 can be sensitive to string noise which does make the kind of sound you mention, this is still apparent on my '88 but I rarely use these types of sounds. I think there are a couple more synth types in the '88 but it's still very basic compared with a synth, possibly deliberately to separate the two products. I certainly wouldn't buy one for the synth sounds alone, I think of these sounds as added bonuses.
