OT: best software for simple editing on Mac?

We are going to have a LOT of these DAT tapes from open loop and
Lena Strayhorn, my dearest dear, has volunteered to edit them down.

Now, she's very bright but not a gear-head so I was wondering
what the best (and cheapest) software would be for a smart
layperson to edit audio on a Mac?
