Thanks for that tip CQ. The Handsonic does have switches to turn controller, and sound for the DBeam on/off. I had not thought of trying that. I guess that I thought that if I turned the controller button off, it would just jump to a default value. Now I will have to try this.

then turning the controller off. The MC-505 has the on/off button for the
DBeam, and a button which cycles through three modes from the front panel.
so I'll first find the position I want, and then press the mode button,
