     Thanks Duncan, that's exactly what I was describing.  Never heard it 
called the "Eltro"
though the term "Klangumwandler" may indeed have been an electronic device 
whose name was sloppily
applied to the rotating head unit.

     Now I wonder if the concept was ever realised in a relatively high 
quality way...
