This Wed. March 16th - Adelaide + Aidan Baker with Mnemosyne Adelaide formed in the summer sun of 2003, in Portland, Oregon. Drawing on their inspirations from a variety of musical genres and artistic mediums, the band discovered a mutual fascination with the combinations of sound and image. Through sonic and visual experimentations, Adelaide coalesced their aesthetic ideas into a performance that includes 16mm film projections, etherial electronics and minimal guitar and drum parts. Their debut self-titled album was released in august of 2004. http://www.adelaidesound.com Mnemosyne is based in Toronto and originally featured Aidan Baker on guitars/loops/vocals, Richard Baker on drums/ percussion, & Rodin Columb on bass/electronics. In early 2005, Graham Miller joined in as a second guitarist & synth/electronics player. Within the context of a 'power trio', they explore fragmentary post/space-rock ranging sonically from washes of ambient sound to walls of fractured dissonance. The group will be performing music from Aidan's newest CD "Figures" now available from Transient Frequency recordings. http://listen.to/aidan http://www.transientfrequency.com Between Sets CD - "Apart" (disc 1) by Paul Shutze Disc 1 of Australian-born, London, UK resident, composer, keyboardist & sound designer Paul Schütze's "Apart" CD merges ambient textures with percussion. http://www.paulschutze.com . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Composed, arranged and performed by Anne Sulikowski, Building Castles out of Matchsticks presented a gorgeous first set of analogue synthesis and accidental sequences. Anne's vocal treatments added an ethereal element to an always intriguing performance. Anne was joined by Psychosomatic Climax Machine for the second set. Featuring Anne, Scott Johnson & Vanessa Price on keyboards and Phil Ogilson & Jeff Sinibaldi on guitars, this improvisational music ensemble captivated listeners with an electric performance of energy-building improvisations. General Chaos, who have become a regular part of Psychosomatic Climax Machine's live performances, supported both shows with their lush, atmospheric visuals. While PiNG organizers have their fingers crossed that the support shown last Wednesday night continues, they are also exploring new possibilities for TAP. Stay tuned for details. Opening with the title track, Anne and guest Scott Johnson create a percussion based groove matched with smooth and haunting vocal stylings. A blend of human and electronic influences that's a stunning and sexy way to start the disc. "I've Got a Camera" continues in a similar vein, a haunting vocal sliding through shifting drum patterns of increasing complexity and style slowly descending into a chaotic whirl of noise. Something very dark and ominous about this track, a feeling of film noir voyeurism and rainy nighttime secrets kept under a pre-post future shock post modern New York City skyline. Brilliant. "Fixed" follows, a rotating drone based piece building in intensity and tension. High pitched whistles and tones play throughout adding to the atmosphere, adding a sense of disturbance to the track. "Now wait for last year....." closes the disc, a repeated melody playing through a huge drum filled cavern eventually giving way to minimalist calm and tranquility. A stunningly powerful piece, a marvel of simplicity that leaves me in awe. Wonderful work. Needless to say, Anne has done it again, releasing a disc that perfectly captures the sounds of lonely hearts spending Saturday nights alone at home toying with electric friends. "You're beautiful..." he said as she looked up with a clockwork smile.
