She creates multi-layered cello compositions which she performs live: recording each part as it is played & controlling the composition in real time via foot pedals linked to an array of electronic devices. Born in Canada, Zoë began her cello studies in a small school in England and while at Sarah Lawrence College, she started to build a career in non-classical cello. Since 2002, Zoë has been a member of Melora Creager's cello-rock ensemble Rasputina. With Rasputina, she has toured the US and Canada at least eight times, opened for acts like Belle & Sebastian and The Legendary Pink Dots, and recorded two albums. After listening to repeated admonishments about unnecessary uses of electricity, I unplugged the television. Convinced I did not need to witness another anchor state the drippingly obvious, I began to wonder if any events - particularly music events - across the city might be cancelled out of concern for excessive power consumption. Electronic music: necessity or extravagance? The answer remained to be discovered later that evening as the PiNG presented an evening of solo guitar works. Nilan Perera started things off with a series of pieces for prepared guitar. Using distorted vocal samples, radiophonics, loops & treatments, Nilan's performance romped through an array of sonic adventures, including a passage with an Eastern tinge and another with a more Western sensibility. Wrapping up with a delicate piece that featured cricket-bird-raccoon-like sounds, Nilan kept the audience guessing with his one-of-a-kind guitar-techniques. CJ Boyd (from Nashville, Tennessee) arrived in Toronto on the tail end of his latest tour. After a brush with the border authorities, CJ made it to the PiNG in fine form. Presenting a lushly rhythmic set, CJ left no doubt in my mind about the status of his music: if beauty is integral, CJ's looping bass guitar stylings are indeed a necessary experience. At the end of the night, Nilan and CJ teamed up for a gorgeous finale, wowing the audience with an intense, haunting improvisation. A blending of sequenced synth patterns, ambient waves, throat singing, eastern percussion & more, "Bislama" is a significant musical achievement, a mixture of styles and sounds that is both inspired and inspiring. From the tidal tones of the opening track, through the shimmering cascades that play throughout "Offering", to the delicate repeated melodies of closing track "Samui", it's a brilliant disc ripe for discovery and exploration. Longtime supporters of AWM and Jim Cole who were lucky enough to pick up the disc in it's original format will be interested to note the addition of a sixteen minute improvisational collaboration between the pair recorded in 2002. The new track "Bali Twilight" is a beautiful piece filled with drifting vocals and subtle mysticism, an excellent addition to an already wonderful release. If you're looking for something new to listen to, or if you're interested in rediscovering a classic release, I would suggest that the 2005 re-issue of "Bislama" is the disc for you.
