RE: Shoutcast Streams

Hi Philip -

I'm going to copy the group on this, because others might have your same
question.

Actually, it was much easier than I thought. There only two bits of
software required: Winamp and a plugin for winamp that connects you to
the Shoutcast server...that's it. It takes about 1 minute to plug in the
IP address, port #, and some other info into the winamp plugin, connect
to the server, and it streams anything you have coming into your
line/mic in or just music you have playing from your hard-drive.

Two steps to get it going:

1) Download winamp and the plugin

Wimamp: http://www.shoutcast.com/download/broadcast.phtml#download
Plugin:
http://www.shoutcast.com/downloads/shoutcast-dsp-1-8-2b-windows.exe

2) Purchase server bandwidth

http://shoutcast.serverroom.us/

I went with the $11.99 US a month option, which allows me to stream 30
GIG of traffic a month. If you stream at 64kbps, you can do the math on
how much music you can stream. If you had 30 listeners (the max number
of simultaneous listeners with the above package), and they all listened
for an hour, that would be 64kbps X 60 X 30 = 115,200 kbps streamed in
that hour...roughly 1 / 260th of your monthly bandwidth. I hope I did
that right! :) 30 GIG is 30,000 MB, is 30,000,000 KB, divided by
115,200 is roughly 260. Good grief, that is 260 hours, right? No
wonder my bandwidth counter hasn't move much after streaming two
perforformance all all day today! Roughly 10 days of streaming. What I
haven't determined is if streaming in stereo is really 64 X 2 kbps,
which would be 5 days of solid streaming.

Kris

Subject: Shoutcast Streams

Hi Krispen,

I'm a long time LD reader of the archives. A while ago I became
interested in live streaming of performances and when you brought up the
thread on LD I was excited to see that you got it to work! Listening to
your beautiful music right now :)

As the thread on LD didn't really explain what needs to be done to get
Shoutcast to work and the documentation on the Shoutcast site is a bit
nebulous, would you mind giving me a brief description of what software
you use for the (live) streaming and how you set up Shoutcast (Doesn't
have to be super detailed). If you learned from online documents, I'd be
glad if you could point me to those.

Do you have to pay for the Shoutcast server?
Which software do you use for *live* streaming of a performance?

Thanks for any info!

Philip
