Respectfully, stereo is indeed an artificial construct, no matter how well or poorly it imitates the tendency of animal sensory organs to come in twos. Recorded music intends to place all the sound in a two-dimensional array that does not represent at all the ways in which we personally experience "live" sound. Of course, this all changes when that sound is played back in a room, but the thinking is totally artificial, in the same way that any man-made approximation of something "real" is "artificial." Simulacra and Simulation. Think of commercials proclaiming how "real" the images on an HD tv are.
