It is a great idea to sell your CD's from the stage a little and to hit the
crowd while they're hot DOES work. If you can have someone else do it (and
they don't necessarily have to be cute, they just need to believe in your
music!) it does work and takes the load off.  If they do believe in your
tunes, they really don't have to be paid unless you want to give them an
occasional shirt or something.
