Sorry to devolve into this non-looping topic. Paul- I believe that America's past is just as violent as the present (Dept. Of Justice has only compiled stats since 1973, and the 80s,90s and 00s were all less violent than the 70s). People's perceived safety from crime does not track with actual crimes rates. People, when polled, perceive crime rates to be going up when the media plays sensationalized crime stories. I will gladly continue this discussion off-list, as it's something in which I am fascinated.
