Steve didn't loop the voices, but rather just used a sampler. He used sample cell for years to create all of those pieces which WERE actually looped, and also used a casio vz-1 to play samples live on stage once he started using them there. Different Trains was done in the studio as three separate quartets layered together, but the click and voices and bells were already prepared... I've played this piece incessantly since 1990 as a member in his ensemble and am most excited to be able to answer a question about it and Reich. Thanks for the opportunity!
