It always sounded/looked to me like he was composing in his head, and 
just absolutely *prying* the notes out of the guitar just as he decided 
what was next.  Sometimes it looked and sounded like he wouldn't be able 
to play even an 1/8th note run... and then he'd just dominate the 
instrument and force it to expel the notes.

I miss you Frankie!  RIP.
