I'll echo Duncan's ebay strategy - email the seller with a routine but not obvious question and start a bit of an email back'n'forth. My usual email is to ask what the shipping will be to Canada (as that's where I live!) or if they'll accept cash which I'll send via courier. I do this regardless of how much the item is listed for.
Based on their response, I think I can get a sense of them. I've only come close to getting screwed over once - a pawnshop in Virginia claimed they didn't receive the cash but a few phone calls to the USPS got things resolved.
