Thanks kelly... that's what i've thought since it was so difficult to obtain
info on websites about it. It's not the first time this happens... I own some sampling units where you just can use the MIDI in for sync and very little more...

Nope. That MIDI port is mostly for decoration. Well, and sync. You
need the footswitch remote to do those things.

I'm selling mine pretty soon, FWIW. It's a really cool and strange
four track recorder. But I need "next loop" and it doesn't do that.
