  Subject: Last Night's Performance
Recording & Notes - Boise State Universith Amphitheater

...just posting my MP3 of a performance last
night at Boise State University. The university is hosting a new experimental
music series, one show a month with 5-6 performers at each show. They will be
held at different venues on the campus. Last night's performance was at their
amphitheater...very cool little Greek/Roman like setup, GIANT stereo PA,
  etc.

In this, I'm using my Epi "Roadie" mini
guitar,  ThinkPad T60p with just the stock soundcard, and MAX/MSP with
the Boogex tube amp VST sim, Reaktor, and all my other max patches. I have a
few new surprises as well, like a new random percussion generator I just
created with MAX..all FM synthesis generated percussion sounds, randomly
triggered.  Anway, here is the blow by blow take, if you want to follow
along on the 30 minutes journey:

0:00 - Song begins using my own max/msp patch I
call "Thick Space". It is a series of pitch shifters and delays to create a
lush pad-like sound. It was my attempt to replace one of my favorite Reaktor
ensemble presets (from the ensemble "Blackbird")...close, so
  close.

1:20 - this is a Reaktor patch called "EarSafe
vs.1.1" (for you Reaktor users to go out and find on their user library); I'm
controlling two parameters with my Behringer FCB controller
pedals

2:53 - clean guitar, melodic and chordal
improv with my max/msp reverb and delay, Boogex amp sim, etc, etc -
  just the typical Hartungian free
  jazz-like improv

4:22 - max/msp reverse delay patch that was
posted on the max/msp list a while back, and Jeff Kaiser simplified for me; I
am controlling the delay rate/pitch with my FCB expression pedals

5:40 - max/msp stereo ring mod patch, controlling
both L and R modulation with my FCB expression pedals

6:52 - At this point, I take the original loop
created with "ThickSpace" above and apply the random variable speed function
of the max/msp Kaiser looper. Basically, it is, at a fixed rate, randomly
selecting varying loop speeds, both forward and reverse; I start applying it
to the Reverse Delay loop as well, a bit after this, plus drop the "Thick
  Space" loop down an octave

6:57 - here you here the debut appears of my new
max/msp FM synthesis based random percussion generator, along with some clean
  guitar chordal improvisation

  8:37 - Here I start using a combination of
"ThickSpace" and my stereo max/msp pitch shifter...creating an uprising,
  swelling pitch effect

10:31 - here enters another Reaktor
patch...called "Patchinko" I believe...sort of a distorted effect with some
  filtering, bit reduction, etc

  11:37 - another Reaktor patch...can't recall the
name, but I wasn't inspired, so I moved on

12:35 - after the fade out, another one of my
favorite Reaktor patches called "Spechter" (sort of like a ring mod but more
metalic sounding; combined with my max/msp stereo pitch shifting patch; some
messing around with this combination for a few minutes with no looping; at
  14:15 I start looping a rhythmic pulse

  14:52 - these sounds, for a few
minutes, are from Nathan Walek's max/msp
granular toolkit. I modified the objects in his toolkit to be true stereo, and
also added some code to control parameters with my two FCB expression pedals,
which you can hear me doing here; I loop a few of the phrases and then drop
them down an octave in the Kaiser Looper...then apply the random variable
  speed function

17:09 - my FM synthesis random percussion enters
  for a second....ah, nevermind.

17:26 - This is a patch that comes with max/msp
(maybe in the sample patches that come with it), called "FM Surfer". It is a
keyboard triggered toy for generating a variety of interesting FM synthesis
  sounds and effects. Fun.

18:36 - some improv with my max/msp stereo pitch
  shifter, using expression pedals, etc

19:39 - FM Surfer enters again...I'm playing it
with my right hand on the keyboard, and also playing the guitar with my left
hand only, with the pitch shifter and expression pedals

  21:07 - Reverse delay appears again....some
  looping with it

21:50 - I start using ThickSpace again, to
generate a series of textured loops...that begin to climax and ascend into
insanity; this is accompanied by some speed shift clicking from the original
set of loops...I still have one loop continuing with that function; then I
apply again to the whole set of textured loops, start improving with ring mod
  wildly...all this chaos fades out

25:05 - major change of direction and feel - back
to some of my older more "melodic" looping approach; I loop a basic motif and
then start adding more loops to compliment it; this is a contrast from all the
prior chaos and electronic mayhem;  this will have sort of a "pretty"
  feel to it, intentionally to generate a drastic contrast to everything prior;
I like this sort of juxtaposition of feels

27:28 - I soon get impatient with the diatonic
prettiness, and start to loop with ThickSpace....adding some dark dissonance
in the background...a storm is coming...yet, I continue to press the guitar
melody a bit...come back little Toto!  We're not ready to enter the storm
yet; the melody around 29:28 starts to morp into polytonalism, and then I
start looping the phrases to create some tension and release; some chordal
  improv

31:50 - I start to replace the four loops with
the same looped note on the guitar, to create a foundation for follow on
  manipulation

32:34 - in order, I apply the Kaiser Looper
random variable speed function to each of the four looped guitar parts, from
the same note; fade out to end

  I hope you enjoy it!
