MIDI design/pogramming books'n'ressources



Because of the resent metronome thread:

I just did a quick peek into the book at:

Looks interesting, lotsa info..  but all Windows(95) and C++ based.
Anyone have pointers to books and ressources about general MIDI design 
and programming techniques?
Preferable using non-platform-specific libs.  Assembly welcomed too.
