I've got 24 years of experience in the electronics industry.  Recreating 
what's already out there for less only happens if you are a big 
corporation 
planning to do mass production or if you start from obsolete hardware that 
is being sold on the salvage market.  The latter is a possibility, but 
won't 
lead you to any long term production potential.  Although it will satisfy 
your own personal needs.

What is superfluous to you isn't to others.  I can name several prominent 
musicians that rely on that feature.

My personal advice is to build what you want for yourself.  Attempting to 
satisfy everybody while staying under $500 is impossible.  If I could 
build 
a looper that meets my needs for that price, I would do it in an instant.
