My approach to panning (since I use stereo loops) is to use mono
source material and pan the send to the loop.

I've messed around with a Paia MS microphone as a sound source -- I
just pan the sound by playing into the mic from the left, right or
points in between (that is, if I'm playing an acoustic instrument, of
course). Or, one could use two mics and move between them.
